Final Fantasy XIII comes out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this week. What do Wii owners in North America get? Final Fantasy IV or Final Fantasy II as its called on the Virtual Console.

Square Enix's Super Nintendo classic will be available as a digital download later today. This version is the original North American version, which means no dashing, protect spells or Recall ability for Tellah. The game will cost 800 Wii Points ($8), 200 Wii Points less than this weeks WiiWare games — Dracula: Undead Awakening and Max & the Magic Marker.

Even die-hard Android fans have to admit that the iPhone and iPod Touch blow it out of the water when it comes to gaming. During a podcast with the Motorola (NYSE: MOT)'s Developer blog, the folks at Bendroid had some interesting things to say about the challenges of creating complex games for Android, as well as the potential for Google (NSDQ: GOOG)'s mobile platform.

Bendroid makes a series of games called Mystique and these are atmospheric mystery games. I downloaded the latest version (the trailer is embedded below) and was a bit surprised at how good it looked. I don't do a ton of gaming on my Droid beyond my SNES emulator, but Mystique Chapter 3 was delivering PlayStation-like graphics at a smooth clip.

Vadim Melnov, Bendroid's lead developer, said the problem with most Android games is that publishers just try and quickly port over a Web or iPhone game to get some additional money or recognition. The Mystique series was specifically crafted for Google's platform, and it was built entirely with Java and the Android software development kit. This makes the graphics even more impressive because it doesn't utilize the native development kit.

The Mystique games are becoming increasingly complex, Melnov said. The first game took about a week to build, the second took a month, and the latest chapter took about two months. Mystique 3 was originally about 15 MB but Melnov said this was shaved down to 7 MB in order to be more palatable for devices like the G1.

As Android grows in popularity with handset makers, developers will increasingly face fragmentation. Melnov described overcoming this as "painful" and that it's "not unsolvable, but it's hard." The various developer forums were helpful and he was effusive in his praise for DeviceAnywhere, which provides app testing on a wide variety of handsets. Melnov also said Google offers multiple resources to help developers properly utilize OpenGL ES for 3D graphics.

While it is still way too early to consider Android a viable gaming alternative to the iPhone, it's good to see that some competition is looming. The Game Developer Conference is coming up in a few weeks and I'll be on the lookout for interesting Android games. The three Mystique games are available on the Android Market now, and range from free to $2.99.

Nokia N900 hacked again. Now you can play games in N900 using PlayStation 3 controller. To do that you have to just follow some Debian source codes. Two months ago another person turned his N900 into a PS3 controller. He used his N900 as PS3 controller using BlueMaemo Bluetooth emulator.

In the video below, you will see a TV-connected Nokia N900 Internet Tablet/Mobile Phone, running SNES emulation software, paired to a Bluetooth PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS controller. After watching the video you can easily imagine your MID/Mobile Phone/Internet Tablet doubling as your primary gaming device both for on-the-go and at home. You too can use a spare SIXAXIS controller in order to dictate gameplay on your Nokia handset. All the instructions you need are here.

Here's another video which shows a N900 turns into a PS3 controller. To do that you have to use an alpha level software, BlueMaemo bluetooth emulator. BlueMaemo is a free application that converts your N900 into a host of bluetooth peripherals including a keyboard, mouse, media remote, game pad, presentation remote and even a PS3 controller.

Its developer Valério Domingos humbly points out that the purpose of connecting up to a PS3 is purely for menu navigation and easier text input, though we've no doubt a few hardcore Nokia loyalists will try using this in an action game to prove the N900's superiority. You may follow Valério and his ongoing refinement of the app in the Maemo.org link below, or you can jump past the break to see the full controller layout and an instructional video on how to hook things up — it's in Italian, but you should be able to grasp what's going on senza problemi.

The Associated Press reports that there's also the question of Sony's investment in the broader mobile app market, away from the PSP, since no one has yet to see any Sony-backed apps for other mobile platforms like Apple's iPhone. There's the third-party PS3 media controller apps, a PlayStation forum interface tool, an unofficial PlayStation emulator, and NetBlender's BD Touch, but there's yet to be a PlayStation Network or Store interface.

Sony needs a reason to be on Windows Phone 7. Microsoft could court Sony here, but again, they'd need a reason to--a reason with the PS2's sales clout.

Yesterday a patent application for a universal video game console controller, filed by Sony in August of 2008, showed up on the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office website.

The patent application states that, "Just like remote controls, game consoles, and thus game controllers, are becoming widespread. It is not surprising to find more than one game console in a household, especially when competing game console manufacturers attempt to attract unconventional consumer groups in the gaming industry. As understood herein, it would be useful to have a universal controller that would be able to work with a variety of game consoles."

According to the patent application, the controller would have a touch-sensitive LCD display that would change based upon the type of console selected. For instance, the display would reflect the control scheme of a Microsoft controller or a Nintendo or a PlayStation controller.

In addition to emulating a Nintendo or Microsoft or Sony controller, the patent also brings up an enormous number of other game consoles as well. The patent describes "a controller made by Nintendo, X-box.TM. game controllers made by Microsoft, Amiga CD-32.TM. controllers, Atari jaguar.TM. controllers, Gravis Gamepad.TM. controllers, Sega controllers, and Turbographics controllers…"

What does this all mean? Well, beyond the fact that Sony obviously wanted to create a controller that can be utilized across numerous consoles, it appears that they also intend to provide control emulations for much older consoles. All of which has to raise the possibility that Sony is developing a console emulator of some sort. Why else would they mention such ancient consoles? At least, we can hope so.

No one's jaw hit the floor when Microsoft demoed Xbox LIVE running on its new Windows Phone 7 platform earlier this week, but what about a similar connection to Sony's PlayStation Network?

Oh the possibilities, if we take Microsoft senior product manager Michael Chang's comments to TechRadar.com seriously.

"If you look at our history in mobiles, we have never blocked anything off this platform because we compete in the same space, at least not in the phone space," Chang told TechRadar.com, suggesting the company has always had an open-door policy for apps from competitors in other areas.

"While I won't cite a specific scenario, I think our concept of openness with partners and our mobile ecosystem often includes our competitors, such as allowing Exchange on other devices."

Sounds simple enough, but the devil's in the political details. Would Sony really consider placing its brand in the lion's den?

There's also the question of Sony's investment in the broader mobile app market, away from the PSP, since we've yet to see any Sony-backed apps for other mobile platforms like Apple's iPhone. Sure, you've got your third-party PS3 media controller apps, a PlayStation forum interface tool, an unofficial PlayStation emulator, and NetBlender's BD Touch, but a PlayStation Network or Store interface?

Nothing yet, and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.

Sony needs a reason to be on Windows Phone 7, and I'm not coming up with one. Sure, Microsoft could court Sony here, but again, they'd need a reason to--a reason with the PS2's sales clout. With US PS3 sales still treading water at just over half Microsoft's US Xbox 360 install base, I can't think of one.

One of the biggest criticisms about the PS3 is the lack of PS2 backwards compatibility. Most gamers may not care about this feature, but the hardcore gamers certainly have this high on their wish list.

I have the launch 60GB PS3 so I have no problem playing PS2, and PSOne games. Those unfortunate souls who purchased a newer model cannot play PS2 games on the PS3. However, they still can play PSOne titles.

Sony removed the Emotion chip, which was the processor for the PS2 and later removed the emulation software from the 80GB PS3 model.

In a recent interview with IGN, Peter Dille, senior VP of Playstation may have inadvertently spilled the beans on PS2 games coming back to the PS3. Dille indicated that Playstation team is working hard on brining more PSOne and PS2 games to the PSN store.

He stated:

From our side, we're going through our own studio organization and trying to make sure all these old games are out there so that we can lead by example, but we're also communicating with all the third-parties about the success of the Final Fantasy games, and other PS1 and PS2 classics.

This comment further supports the story I reported back in September regarding the leaked secret SEGA/Sony meeting notes. According to those notes, Sony revealed to SEGA, plans to bring PS2 games back on the PS3. SEGA also talked about bringing Dreamcast games to the PSN store.

Bringing back hard to find games like Final Fantasy VII with a manual in a digital form is great. However, the big question is- will Sony bring back the PS2 emulator so gamers can play off the shelf games? The answer is probably no as there is money to be made here.

Sega is launching a free Genesis emulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch next month, and will include a free game.

Gizmodo reports that Sega is gearing up to release a free Genesis emulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch next month. Currently Sega already offers six standalone games for the platform: Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Monkey Ball, and more.

With that said, why would Sega bother to release an emulator? It's all about microtransactions. With Apple giving the thumbs up for in-app purchasing across the board, game developers are finding ways to offer free or reduced-priced apps... and make additional revenue on the side. Sega is embracing this structure with the release of its upcoming Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection app.

According to Gizmodo, the emulator app will come packed with one free game: Space Harrier II. Gamers will also be able to purchase Sonic the Hedgehog ($5.99), Golden Axe ($4.99), Ecco the Dolphin ($2.99), and Shining Force ($2.99) at launch. Currently there's no indication that pre-purchased copies of Sonic and Golden Axe will be migrated into the app.

The original Sega Genesis Collection release contained a plethora of Sega classics including Altered Beast, Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II - IV, Shinobi III, Vectorman, Virtua Fighter 2, and twenty other titles. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last year, offered a whopping 48 Sega games, some of which must be unlocked.

Although Sega did not reveal the emulator's eventual library, we expect an official announcement soon.

iPhone cracker geohot claims to have unlocked the PS3!

Famed iPhone hacker, George Hotz, who was credited in getting the iPhone completely unlocked and freed from AT&T's network, is at it again – this time with his efforts concentrated on the Sony PlayStation 3.

"The PS3 has been on the market for over three years now, and it is yet to be hacked. It's time for that to change," Hotz wrote on his blog. "My end goal is to enable unsigned code execution, making every unit into a test and opening up a third party development community, either through software or hardware(with a mod chip). Five weeks after Hotz began his endeavour, he posted on his blog a message of victory: "I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I've also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.

Hotz did not reveal which exploit he found and hasn't reached the point yet of running unsigned code (that he's told us about); but if things continue to go well for the 20-year-old hacker, we could be seeing a cracked open PS3 system soon.

It should be noted that Hotz is working on a previous-platform PS3 that's compatible with running Linux – something the new PS3 Slim consoles cannot do. It's unclear if the newer PS3 Slim would be vulnerable to Hotz's hacks.

We recently stumbled across a hack that allowed the Nokia N900 to run Mac OS X. Now another mod has surfaced, but this time it's all about gaming.

Polish developer Tomasz Sterna has succesfully managed to get the PlayStation 3's Sixaxis controller to talk to Nokia's Maemo 5 smartphone, which is handy considering the N900's growing emulation scene.

The Bluetooth mod, which can be seen in action below, pairs the N900 and PlayStation 3 controller, allowing owners of both gadgets a unique way to control their mobile games collection.

Want to give the mod a try? Tomasz has posted instructions on his personal site, but be careful: He warns that the hack is not for novice users.

I'm biting! I just need to know a few things...

I'm on o2 with the 3.1.2 phone firmware and 05.11 modem firmware. I don't want to unlock the carrier.

Can I just use redsn0w 0.9.2?

It says it requires a tethered reboot.. is that whenever the phone runs out of juice and reboots when it's got enough charge again? So I'd have to have it connected to a computer rather than the mains-usb adapter? And is that any computer or the one I ran redsn0w on?

Can I still use itunes as normal? I.e. podcasts, purchases, apps?

How do I uninstall it?

What happens if I upgrade to Apple's 3.1.3 firmware? Anything I need to do/make sure of beforehand?

Nokia N900 is slowly progressing from a portable gaming device to a portable console. The recipe is simple – a Nokia N900, a SIXAXIS controller from a PlayStation 3, a TV, TV-out cable and a bit of software magic.

The current demo that works involves a Nintendo SNES emulator that is controlled by a SIXAXIS controller and instead of using the 3.5" screen on the Nokia N900, the phone is connected to a TV set using a cable. Here are the instructions on how to get it working. Be warned though, it requires you to install a new kernel, as the default one doesn't have support for a joystick or a mouse.

If you think about it, the Nintendo Wii uses a composite cable too and it's not a pinnacle of processing power either – it's the games (and the Wii Remote of course) that make the game. The SIXAXIS controller has accelerometer sensors too.

Now, if playing Mario is not your game (sorry for the pun), the Nokia N900 plays Duke Nukem 3D too. Not to mention the video demos of the N900 playing Quake 3, in fact two N900 can play in multiplayer.

I haven't found a demo that combines the controller and Quake 3 yet, but I'm sure it won't be long before that hits YouTube. Here's the Quake 3 on Nokia N900 video I mentioned:

The PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS controller connects to the Nokia N900 via Bluetooth and features two sticks, a D-pad and four action keys. The left stick controls the "mouse", the right stick controls horizontal and vertical scroll wheels, and the D-pad and other keys map to several keys of the QWERTY keyboard.

Yes, the Nokia N900 doesn't have a mouse or scroll wheels, but think of those things in terms of desktop gaming. It's another matter how each of these controls maps to controls in each specific game.

I'm not suggesting that the Nokia N900 will eat into the Nintendo Wii sales, but when they get Quake 3 working with the wireless controller and someone releases (or ports) one or two games that utilize the accelerometers, it will become a true game console in its own right.

I have the launch 60GB PS3 so I have no problem playing PS2, and PSOne games. However, those unfortunate souls who purchased a newer model cannot play PS2 games on the PS3. However, they still can play PSOne titles.

Sony removed the Emotion chip, which was the processor for the PS2 and later removed the emulation software from the 80GB PS3 model.

He stated:

From our side, we're going through our own studio organization and trying to make sure all these old games are out there so that we can lead by example, but we're also communicating with all the third-parties about the success of the Final Fantasy games, and other PS1 and PS2 classics.

When Sony announced the PSPgo, it was greeted with a lot of mixed reactions. The handheld was incredibly sleek and clearly the smallest and most portable of the PSP models. However, the $250 price point turned many off, especially since the later revealed PS3 Slim was only $50 more. Recent rumors have revealed that Sony is looking for a fresh start with the PSPgo.

According to some unnamed sources, Gamervision has reported that Sony will be relaunching the PSPgo. The website has speculated that this relaunch could include a price drop, which would really help sales, in PlayStation LifeStyle's opinion. It certainly worked with the "relaunch" of the PS3, which had a redesign, new advertising campaign, and price drop.

Besides the fact that I already bought one… probably a good idea. I love my Go, though, and I'd take it any day over my original PSP.

Well if they do relaunch at a lower price point it proves that I bought to soon but I know that this was going to happen sooner or later. But what it needs most is bundled software in the box for added value for the customer. That lame Patapon voucher was a waste of time since it was not the actual game. It should be the actual game not a demo.

What is needed is either an inexpensive memory stick with games, preloaded games in memory or voucher's in the box for a game from PSN. And seeing that this is a digital download related piece of hardware the download voucher would make the most sense.

I really hope there's a price drop, I've been needing a portable gaming system but I don't want to blow 200+ on one and the DS doesn't have any games I like.

They're going to have to do a lot more then drop the price for me. Like get more of the games up on the PSN and get third parties on the bandwagon. It's a shame when a great game releases on the UMD but not PSN. Oh well pay more for less..

I still wouldn't get one…a handheld needs to be priced at or below the $150 mark…they don't deserve the kind of money that a full console like the PS3 gets…not to mention I have no need for portable gaming. When would I have time for it??? When I'm busy working?? or when I'm out with friends?? or when I'm sitting at home in front of a big screen TV with a PS3 connected to it???

It's a turd…fix it Sony…and yes I own one.

What really upsets me is the lack of support. They promised UMD transfers…and then pulled it (NA users have never been given the freebie offer EU got). There are still great games that have not made it to PSN. Comparing PSN to store pricing I would never buy from them anyway.
It's like everything they promised was pulled (we still haven't got digital comics in Canada…something they said we would have in December…much like our own Uncharted 2 contest this promise will be forgotten).

I would like to see it revived, but I doubt it will happen. I think Sony may cut and run on this. Our only hope would be if it was cracked….I would enjoy the SNES emulator on my PSPgo.

On a positive note, the fact that sony acknowledges the desperate need for a revamp is great news. I'm pretty eager to see what they can do with it. The ps3 slim was retooled with some amazing ads, an amazing price, and a fresh stellar line up.

If there a price drop which also makes all the old models drop as well, that would be extremely nice. Hopefully before tax time, now that would be nice because I'd like to pick one up.

A price drop would be great, but seriously, it would have to be a very large discount to get me to consider it. If I want a PSP, I'll get one that can play the entire PSP game library, and this thing can't. And the fact that there's no discount for Go games, even though there's no physical media involved, is another huge turnoff.

Good point Jack, since all games are download-able content, it should be much cheaper to purchase games. Because the PSP 3000 core pack cost 170$ they figure 250$ is only 80$ more. But then your right there at the PS3's 300$ price tag for only 50$ more. I would definitely get a ps3 over the GO. So it seems that they are stuck. What will happen though is the PSP 3000 will drop to about 149.99$ then the GO to about 199.99$. That is the only way they will satisfy the need for a price drop.

I'd take a PSP Go! Phone over my iPhone. I don't know why people waste their money on the iPod Touch, "it's an iPod with wifi", common, just say you wish you had an iPhone but don't have AT&T but still want to look "cool". Anyone who says the Go! is too expensive needs to see a comparison between it and the iPod Touch (and then compare sales) One has more useful Apps (if you're connected to the internet) and the other have WAY better games. touch screen d-pad… that's just stupid. they both have the same hard drive space for the price and they both play music, WOW.

I really wanted the psp go when i first heard about it, but when they said no to umd games being able to transfer to it (even a small limited list of them) I said no way. And the price of the online games is too high as well. I can buy god of war for like 1/2 the psn store price and own teh physical game, why would i want the other one? Also 16 gigs of storage isnt enough.

I think we are more likely to get a PSP 2 at E3 rather than a relaunch.

I wanted one originally too, but the price pushed me off the fence. I just could not justify $250 for this thing, especially because I felt a "revamp" would happen the week after I purchased it. I'm glad I waited, maybe there will be some good news for the PSP Go! now.
